Trail Crew Leader (1 position open)

May to October – Full Time Seasonal (exact timing negotiable)
Work Schedules are four 10-hour days, 7am to 5:30pm.

Job Description

The crew leader will perform independently, or as a leader of a small project crew for the TTF dirt trail construction and maintenance program. Work will involve construction and completion of trails projects in remote locations on the Tahoe National Forest (including wilderness areas) or other lands in the greater Truckee area. This position will be under the direction of the Program Director or Stewardship Coordinator but will take the lead on trail logouts and routine maintenance outings.

Crew leader will also:

  • Plan and implement the logistics required for completion of projects associated with trail maintenance and construction;
  • Use various tools and equipment to maintain and construct trails;
  • Participate in training and supervising crew maintenance/construction activities;
  • Ensure quality of completed work conducted by the trail crew, identifying and implementing corrective actions as necessary;
  • Identify future restoration projects;
  • Monitor/report trail conditions; and
  • Guide volunteers on community trail building days.

Job Requirements

Must enjoy and be willing to ride mountain bikes, hike, and walk regularly for long distances. Must have a positive attitude, be a team player, and be willing to stay motivated during long days in the field. Must be a good communicator and willing to teach others and able to provide positive and corrective feedback.  Successful candidate should also have:

  • Knowledge of the technical methods and procedures needed to carry out (alone or as a fully functioning team or crew member) trail system operations and maintenance techniques (such as full bench, hardened stream crossing, check step, turnpike, climbing turn, and rolling grade dip construction; slough and berm removal, and primitive tool use).
  • Experience scheduling daily activities and providing input for trail program management.
  • Knowledge of National Forest trail standards and best management practices.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools (crosscut saw, rock bar, pick mattock, McLeod, double jack, loppers, Pulaski, grip hoist… etc.) and power tools (drills, chainsaws, skid steers, mini excavators). Chainsaw certification and familiarization with chainsaw maintenance and repairs is a plus.
  • Ability to work outdoors in conditions that include steep and rough terrain, dense vegetation, heavy rains, overhead hazards and inclement weather.

Working Conditions

Daily work is in the field and requires the ability to do strenuous physical labor in all types of conditions. Travel to sites includes vehicle travel over rough roads, mountain biking with a bob trailer loaded with tools or backpacking and hiking for long distances in steep terrain carrying tools, fuel and chainsaws. Work may be performed in remote locations in wilderness areas and backcountry settings. The work requires hiking and climbing in steep, uneven terrain, exposure to adverse weather and insects, performing physical labor, bending, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds or more. Camping out in wilderness settings for up to four nights in a variety of weather conditions may be required. Temperatures may range from very hot and dry to cool and extremely wet. Rain, snow, mud, wind, dust and smoke are all possible. This position requires working around heavy machinery and participating in weekly safety meetings and Job Hazard Analysis discussions.  Work requires the use of safety equipment such as over the ankle boots, gloves, eye protection, ear protection and hardhats.

Chainsaw Certification crosscut saw certification, PCTA Trail Skills college weekend training, GPS use for navigation and mapping, navigational tool apps (Avenza Pro and Trail Forks), U.S. Forest Service radio training for emergency use, First Aid/CPR training, Wilderness First Aid, Leave no Trace ethics.

Housing

Free Primitive camping may be available (vault toilets, $ showers nearby) Limited cell phone service and no WIFI at this location.

Compensation

Hourly rate from $22-$24/hour, depending on experience, with the opportunity for mid-season increase and season-end bonus. Position includes uniforms and a personal equipment stipend of $250.

Trail Crew Member (2-3 positions)

Job Description

Crew members will work under a designated crew leader along with a small project crew on a variety of TTF dirt trail construction and maintenance projects. This position provides support work to the Truckee Trails trail building and maintenance program as a member of a trail crew. This position conducts erosion, sediment, and trail maintenance work including construction of water bars, rolling dips and rock removal; brushing; tread maintenance; and removing down trees. The position also conducts installation, repair and maintenance of trail protection structures and signs.  Daily use and maintenance of hand tools (crosscut saw, rock bar, pick mattock, McLeod, double jack, loppers, Pulaski, grip hoist, etc.), power tools (drills, chainsaws, skid steers, mini excavators). This position requires working around heavy machinery and participating in weekly safety meetings and Job Hazard Analysis discussions.

Job Requirements

  • Six months of general work experience that includes successfully working and communicating with co-workers/supervisors and completing tasks independently; OR one season of experience that was at least three months in duration in forestry aid or technician work; engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices combined with knowledge of forestry/environmental restoration operations and equipment; farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment and that provided a basic understanding of land use; or forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work; OR successful completion of one year (45 quarter or 30 semester hours) of study above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in any combination of courses such as range management or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management, engineering, biology, mathematics, or other natural or physical sciences; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience; AND the ability to work outdoors in conditions that include steep and rough terrain, dense vegetation, heavy rains, and inclement weather.
